You’ve got to what?

Have you ever noticed this before?

musings

You might’ve noticed, if you’ve been receiving these musings a while, that I can be a bit of a pedant when it comes to words.

In particular, the words we tell ourselves.

And I don’t mean obvious words like ‘I’m such a loser’. (You’re not, by the way).

I’m talking about the more subtle words. Those sneaky little inbetweeny verbs that hide between the words we hear ourselves say. The ones wereally don’t notice, but affect us fully. The ones that if we tinker just a tad, bring them into the present tense perhaps, can transform how we feel in a flash.

Verbs like ‘got’, when they come before ‘to’.

Think about it for a sec. How often do you say “I’ve got to…”?

“I’ve got to put a wash on”
“I’ve got to take the car to the garage”
“I’ve got to stop on the way back and pick up dinner”
“I’ve got to take the kids to school”
“I’ve got to get my hair done”

Got to. Got to. Got to.

But what if we switch the verb ‘got’ to ‘get’? So it’s in the present tense:

“I get to put a wash on”
“I get to take the car to the garage”
“I get to pick up dinner”
“I get to take the kids to school”
“I get to get my hair done”

Can you feel that difference? A little grammar-glimmer of gratitude shining in?

Suddenly we’re reminded we’re lucky to have access to the miracle that is the washing machine, a garage that can fix our car, a shop that has all the dinner we could want… all with just the flick of syntax 😉

So, what might you get to do today?

Happy Tuesday 🙂

Love, Jo x
