“What’s here when there’s no problem to fix?”

This is what meditation teacher (and my dear friend) Jimmy asked at the end of a guided meditation that I was lucky enough to take part in, on one of his courses* that I attended recently.

It was a transcendental feeling that came over me when he asked this question. Deeply peaceful and energising at the same time. Blissful is-ness. I haven’t forgotten it and I now ask myself this question a lot.

* Let me know if you’d like the details, it was wonderful.

The mind LOVES having things that need fixing, doesn’t it. But the fix never comes because as soon as it does, another need-to-fix quickly comes and fills the space. The space of us, the space that when experienced as space is quite simply: transcendent.

But the problem is, problems are important to us. They define us and make us feel important. Carrying lots of them gives us purpose. If we don’t have one we create one. Our egos love to collect them, as many as possible, because they’re ego fuel. But here’s a little experiment:

Ask yourself: What is my main problem today?

Now ask yourself: Where is it?

Can you see it? Is it in front of you? Beside you?

Or is it, in fact, in your head?

Well, they might be in my head but they still need fixing!! You might say. (Because the last thing the mind wants is to not be fixing problems.)

But what if right now is alright?

What if the fact that you can even think about fixing problems right now, means you’re ok?

What if there’s no decision to make because if it was so important you would’ve made a decision quickly and instinctively (i.e. if your house is burning down there tends not to be a decision of “hmmm shall I wait inside until the fire brigade arrives, or shall I get outside?” You don’t think, you get out immediately!)

What if residing more in the space of now, where there’s no problem to fix, actually allows instincts to speak and solutions to come?

No problem can be solved by the same level of consciousness that created it.

Albert Einstein

Take a breath, tune in and ask yourself: “What's here when there’s no problem to fix?”

Feel the response.

Happy Tuesday,
